The Theological Seminary of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Russia, the Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Central Asia is located 2 kilometers from St. Petersburg, Russia, on the south bank of the picturesque Neva River in the village of Novosaratovka. In 1994, the Evangelical Lutheran Church obtained the former Lutheran church there (St. Catherine’s) with the purpose of founding a seminary. Originally built in a classical style, the church was reconstructed, and the building was divided into two floors before the Second World War. After a long period of renovation the main building of the Seminary took on its current form – on the first floor there are two classrooms, a chapel (St. Catherine’s), the library, a kitchen and a cafeteria. On the second floor is the student dormitory, which includes a small kitchen and a common room where students can relax and watch TV after class.
The Seminary’s campus has a second building as well, in which are located additional living quarters, as well as working space for staff, faculty and students.
The Seminary began its work in April 1997. The main goal of the Seminary is the preparation of pastors for work in ELCROS congregations. In addition to on-site education, there is also an extension program, through which ELCROS members may deepen their theological knowledge. With this same purpose the Seminary offers short-term courses of continuing education for pastors and specialized education for congregational leaders, young pastors, and others church workers.
