Alexander Gross
Alexander is one of the first graduates of the full-time, on-site program at the Seminary. He graduated in July of 2002. Alexander has been working in the administration of the German Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Ukraine in Odessa since the middle of 2002. He has two spheres of responsibility – church-wide and local (Odessa area).
The first area includes: • Education in the Church, i.e., leading 10-14 seminars a year on various themes. Part of the development of an educational system in the GELCU is the creation of a library. • Work with society, which includes two sub-spheres, ecumenical contacts (the “Odessa Spiritual Council” and the vice-chair of the Odessa Evangelical Alliance) and putting out the church newspaper, which has been published since the fall of 2003. • Christian camps. At present, Alexander is the director and spiritual leader of the camp “Gloria,” located not far from Odessa on the banks of the Black Sea. In 2003 the camp had two groups – youth (14-17 years old), which had 100 participants and children (9-13), which had 80 participants.
Alexander’s second set of responsibilities are tied with pastoral service in the Odessa deanery. He was put in charge of two village congregations, and with time another small village congregation with 10-12 members has formed. This is the result of active missionary work of a small group of people from Odessa. Worship services are held not only in the villages, but also in cities. In Odessa, Nikolaev and Izmail Alexander leads services approximately once every two months. As a rule, he co-presides at all services on special holidays with the pastor of the congregation in Odessa, Marcus Huck.
