Our library serves teachers, full-time and extension students of the Seminary.
Founded in 1997, the library originally consisted of English and German books stacked in one corner of a auditorium. At first, the books came from Martin Luther Bund in Erlagen, Germany, from LILAP (Lutheran International Library Assistance Program), The Lutheran World Federation, The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, and The Lutheran Heritage Foundation.
Now, thanks to the help of Professor Gerhard Krodel and his wife, Joan, our library has marvelous reading room for reference books and computers. In the stacks, our library has over 6000 books and periodicals in Russian (over 4000), German (over 1000), and English (nearly 1000). Our library’s literature covers all spheres of theology, world history, culture, psychology, philosophy, and linguistics. The classics of Russian and foreign literature all also available for the wider education of our students. The library is proud to have a set of Luther’s Collected Works (Weimarer Ausgabe), as well as the American edition of the Luther's collected works.
In October of 2002 the library received the library of Archbishop Kretschmar. Dr. Kretschmar’s personal library consists of over 7000 books and journals; for the most part, this literature is in German, but there are also works in English, French, Italian, Russian and other languages. His collection consists of books in the areas of theology, philosophy, history, art, culture and political science; these books are being integrated into the library's general collection, as space restrictions allow. Since we have no additional funds to make major rennovations, we have found a way to give us some space in the meantime by rearranging shelves. Of course, this is not enough to fit the 5000 books that are still in storage, but it will give us an opportunity to place around 1000 more volumes.
While the library originally had its own system of organizing books, step-by-step the library is moving to the Library of Congress system. Currently, the English and German sections of the library are fully converted, and it is hoped that the Russian portion of the catalog wil be done soon.
Our librarian since 2003 has been Tasha Kharitonova (ThD), who has also occasionally taught (English and 'Theological Reading') and translated for the Seminary.
